White Ants Season:
In Brisbane, Australia white ants, or termites, are real problems and can cause serious damage to your house. As Sun Tsu, the famous military strategist said, know thy enemy. This is as true for white ants as it is for a marauding army. Being forewarned is being forearmed.
That is why knowing about the white ant lifecycle is important; as it can help you defend your home from this destructive creature. Generally speaking, the termite swarm arrives during the wet season, around the summer months. The wetter the summer; the more white ants will arrive. Millions of the creatures will fly in search of a food source, losing their wings when they do. This is one of the most important telltales, as you will notice all the expended wings lying around. Other things to look for are piles of wood shavings and small holes in any timber.
The best defense against white ants is prevention. The higher and dryer a house is the less likely it is to get infested. Do not leave wood piled against your house and have your house inspected at least once a year. If you leave a white ant infestation then the damage just gets worse.
There are so many different species of ants; sometimes it is difficult to remember which is which. One of the easiest ways of distinguishing between ants is by colour, so here is a helpful list to help you identify different ants.
Different types and colors of Ants are:
Odorous House Ant whose very name should strike fear into your heart. The Odorous House Ants is about two millimeters long and is a brown or black colour. Though they nest outside, the smell of these ants is enough to make you want instant termination.
The Pharaoh Ant is a pest as it builds its nest in the space between your walls and almost anywhere else it can get a purchase. The worker is a distinctive honey yellow colour.
The Carpenter Ant, whose name implies a predilection for wood, can range from a light orangey brown all the way through to black. They are about five to ten millimeters in length and will make their home in any timber around your house.
Red Fire Ants are one of the latest scourges to hit Australia. They landed in the Brisbane area and have proven to be a viscous and unwanted guest, whose bite stings like you were on fire. They are a reddish brown colour and are generally about five millimeters long.
